Ice Forming on Indoor or Outdoor Unit

Ice or frost visible on evaporator coil, refrigerant lines, or outdoor unit

Fix Steps:
1
Turn system OFF immediately at thermostat - continued operation will damage compressor
2
Turn fan to "ON" position to help thaw ice (not AUTO)
3
Check air filter - dirty filter is most common cause, replace immediately
4
Inspect all supply and return vents for blockages
5
Ensure at least 50% of home's vents are open
6
Check refrigerant lines for excessive ice buildup
7
Let system thaw completely (4-6 hours) before restarting
8
Once thawed, check for proper airflow from vents
9
Monitor thermostat setting - don't set too low (below 68°F can cause freezing)
10
If freezing recurs, likely low refrigerant - call for service
Preventive Tip

Change filter every 30 days. Never close more than 50% of vents. Maintain minimum 68°F setpoint. Schedule professional refrigerant check annually. Keep outdoor unit clean and clear.

Related FAQs

When airflow is restricted, the evaporator coil gets too cold and moisture in the air freezes on it. This creates a vicious cycle - more ice means even less airflow. Always address the root airflow issue.

NEVER! You can damage the delicate coil fins and refrigerant lines. Always let it thaw naturally by running the fan only or turning the system off completely.

Change filters monthly, keep at least 50% of vents open, never set temperature below 68°F, ensure proper insulation, and schedule annual professional maintenance.

Ice on refrigerant lines indicates low refrigerant (leak) or a metering device problem. This requires professional repair - refrigerant systems are sealed and cannot be DIY fixed.
